Statement:

As of March 15, 2013, the Department of Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (VA NWIHCS) has temporarily moved all surgical procedures to non-VA community medical facilities while immediate repairs are made on the surgical suites at the Omaha VA Medical Center. These repairs are necessary to ensure that our Veteran patients’ safety is not compromised due to humidifiers not maintaining required environmental standards for operating rooms. In addition, VA NWIHCS temporarily ceased accepting referral surgery cases from other VA health care systems until surgical suites are back in service to ensure we can manage our patients’ surgical needs.

Background:

The ultimate goal is reduce delays due to required maintenance, ensure long-term continuity of care, and provide a full-scale assessment of required maintenance to return surgical suites to full operation. These steps are intended to mitigate surgical procedure delays while ensuring our patients’ safety.
